Experience nature and history - Weißenhäuser Brök nature reserve

Just a few kilometres from the Ostsee Baumhaushotel lies a unique piece of nature and history: the Weißenhäuser Brök. This impressive nature reserve not only offers a fascinating landscape, but also exciting insights into the region's past. Between dunes, brackish water lagoons and historical traces, you can experience Schleswig-Holstein at its most pristine.

A natural paradise with history

The name "Brök" comes from the Low German word "Bruchland", meaning a marshy or wet area. Over the centuries, nature has created an impressive landscape here. But people have also left their mark:

  • Early utilisation: The Weißenhäuser Brök was already partially drained in the Middle Ages to make it suitable for agriculture. Nevertheless, large parts of the area remained natural.
  • Historical significance: In the 20th century, the Weißenhäuser Brök was deliberately renaturalised as part of a coastal protection project. Today, the area is an important refuge for flora and fauna.
  • Cultural connection: The nearby estates around our tree house hotel, in particular the Weißenhaus estate, have characterised the region for centuries and are an important part of its history.

A nature reserve full of life

The Weißenhäuser Brök is not only a place of tranquillity, but also a hotspot for biodiversity. Nature, culture and modern conservation concepts come together here.

  • Unique habitats: reed beds, brackish water lagoons and neighbouring dunes offer an impressive variety of ecosystems.
  • Bird paradise: Over 150 bird species, including the Eurasian curlew and the black-tailed godwit, use the area as a resting, breeding or wintering site.
  • Rare plants: Species such as beach milkwort and marsh lousewort thrive here, making the Weißenhäuser Brök a botanical treasure.

The Weißenhäuser Brök experience

Whether for a relaxing walk or intensive wildlife watching - the Weißenhäuser Brök is an experience for all the senses. The mixture of nature and history makes this nature reserve so special.

  • Hiking trails: Well-maintained paths lead through the area and offer you the opportunity to explore the surroundings on your own.
  • Wildlife spotting: With a little patience and a pair of binoculars, you can discover rare bird species and other animals.
  • Photography: The landscape with its lagoons, reed beds and historical elements offers countless photo opportunities.

The megalithic tombs of Weißenhäuser Brök - Traces of the past

The Weißenhäuser Brök nature reserve is not only a place of exceptional natural beauty, but also a fascinating witness to the past. On its eastern border, in the immediate vicinity of the historic sea dyke, which was built after the flood disaster of 1872, there are two impressive barrows dating back to around 2000 BC. These burial mounds date back to the transition period from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age and tell a story that goes back several millennia.

The burial mounds - monuments of the Bronze Age

The two well-preserved burial mounds stand as silent witnesses to the cultures of the time. They were once built from plaggen - cut-out pieces of turf - which formed a robust structure. Inside were simple burial chambers made of fist-sized to head-sized stones. These chambers were used for several reburials, which indicates that the tombs played a central role in religious and social life over a long period of time.

One particular detail that archaeologists such as Karl Kersten discovered during excavations in 1930 is the presence of fire layers. These indicate that the wooden coffins found in the graves may have been burnt before the burial chambers were sealed. This could have been part of a ritual process that symbolised the bond between the living and the deceased.

Finds from a bygone era

The finds documented by Kersten are of great archaeological value. They include:

  • A decayed bronze dagger, which proves the use of the graves in the Early Bronze Age.
  • A typical Bronze Age edge axe, which shows how tools evolved over the centuries.
  • Various flint tools, including chisels, points and blade scrapers, illustrating the slow transition from Stone Age to Bronze Age technology.

These artefacts provide an insight into the daily lives, craftsmanship and spiritual beliefs of the people of the time.

The significance of the megalithic tombs

The barrows were not only burial sites, but probably also had a deeper cultural and religious significance. They served as places of remembrance of ancestors and may have represented a link between the world of the living and the dead for the communities of the time. At the same time, they symbolised the transience of life and reminded people to accept their place in nature and in the cycle of life.

A walk through history

Today, the megalithic tombs in the Weißenhäuser Brök invite you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. Visitors can explore the ancient monuments and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds this place. The interplay of history, nature and the special landscape of the nature reserve makes this site a unique destination for nature lovers, history buffs and those seeking peace and quiet alike.

Other historical sites in the area

While some of the graves once listed in the land register are no longer preserved today, the region still offers numerous other archaeological highlights. In the neighbouring area of Putlos, there are four more megalithic tombs that still impress today with a height of up to five metres.
