Tree house hotel - What makes a modern tree house hotel

What is a tree house hotel?

A tree house hotel is a special form of accommodation where guests spend the night in modern tree houses - usually several metres above the ground and embedded in a natural environment.

In contrast to classic tree houses from childhood or simple leisure buildings, tree house hotels today combine nature experience, architecture and comfort. Large windows, private terraces and high-quality interiors create a retreat that is both extraordinary and relaxing.

Treehouse hotels are often deliberately built in tranquil landscapes - between forests, meadows or near lakes or coasts. Guests come here to get away from it all and experience a special time-out.

Definition: What is a tree house hotel?

A tree house hotel is a hotel complex in which several tree houses are used as accommodation. The buildings usually stand several metres above the ground on stable structures and are fully equipped - with a bedroom, bathroom and often a private terrace.

In contrast to individual leisure tree houses, a tree house hotel is a professional accommodation establishment. Guests book individual tree houses in a similar way to hotel rooms or holiday homes and spend their stay there in the middle of nature.

Typical features of a tree house hotel are

  • several tree houses as accommodation units

  • Elevated location at treetop level

  • modern facilities with bathroom, bed and heating

  • Quiet location in natural surroundings

This combination makes tree house hotels a special form of accommodation between a nature hotel, design accommodation and an unusual overnight experience.

How tree house hotels have developed

The idea of spending the night in a tree house has fascinated people for generations. In the past, however, tree houses were mostly simple constructions - small huts in trees, built for children or as a leisure project.

It is only in recent years that a separate accommodation concept has emerged: the tree house hotel.

Today, modern tree house hotels combine several elements:

  • natural architecture

  • high-quality interiors

  • sustainable construction

  • special location in the landscape

This has created a new form of travel - between nature holiday, design hotel and unusual accommodation.

Tree house or tree house hotel - the difference

Not every tree house is automatically a tree house hotel.

While a tree house is usually a single leisure building, a tree house hotel is a professionally run accommodation with several units and hotel-like service.

Tree house hotels combine the feeling of a tree house with the comfort of modern accommodation and the service of a hotel.

What types of tree house hotels are there?

Different concepts have developed in Germany.

Family tree house hotels

Some facilities are part of farms or holiday resorts and are primarily aimed at families. They often focus on activities for children, animals or play facilities.

Adventure tree house hotels

Other facilities are part of larger leisure parks or adventure parks. Here, the focus is primarily on the extraordinary overnight experience.

Boutique tree house hotels

A third category are smaller facilities with a small number of units, modern architecture and a quiet location. These tree house hotels emphasise design, closeness to nature and privacy.

What does a modern tree house hotel look like?

The architecture of modern tree house hotels has evolved considerably in recent years. Today, modern facilities focus on contemporary design and high-quality materials.

Typical features include

  • Large panoramic windows with a view of the landscape

  • Private terraces at treetop level

  • high-quality beds and quiet bedrooms

  • modern bathrooms with natural light

  • Fully equipped kitchens or kitchenettes

  • Sustainable construction and natural materials

This combination creates an atmosphere that combines the experience of nature with modern living comfort.

Why people spend the night in a tree house

Many guests deliberately choose to spend the night in a tree house because they are looking for an unusual form of accommodation.

Typical reasons are

  • the experience of nature

  • A special overnight stay away from traditional hotels

  • A romantic break for two

  • Peace and distance from everyday life

  • the desire for a new change of perspective

The elevated location and the view over forests, meadows or landscapes create a feeling of freedom and deceleration.

Tree house hotels in Germany

Treehouse hotels are still a relatively new form of accommodationin Germany. However, various concepts have emerged in recent years - from simple tree houses to architecturally designed facilities.

Many operators attach particular importance to

  • sustainable construction

  • minimal impact on nature

  • high-quality materials

  • small facilities with few units

This creates a travel experience between a nature holiday, architecture and special accommodation.

Terms relating to tree house hotels

In addition to the term "tree house hotel", other terms are also used:

Tree hotel
A more modern, international variant of the term tree house hotel. This term is frequently used in Scandinavia in particular.

Tree chalet
Usually refers to particularly comfortable or luxurious tree houses with spacious facilities.

Treehouse apartment
Often used for larger tree houses that are suitable for longer stays or families.

All terms ultimately describe the same idea:
A special accommodation in an elevated location in the middle of nature.

The development of modern tree house hotels

Tree houses have a long history. In some regions of the world, they were originally built as protection against floods or animals - for example in parts of South-East Asia or Papua New Guinea.

In Europe, tree houses later developed into romantic retreats in gardens and parks.

It was only in recent decades that a tourism concept of its own emerged: the tree house hotel. Today, modern facilities combine architecture, sustainability and nature experiences to create a new form of travelling.

Example of a modern tree house hotel

One example of a modern tree house hotel is the Ostsee Baumhaushotel in Schleswig-Holstein.

The stylish tree houses stand at treetop level in a tranquil landscape near the Baltic Sea. Large windows open up the view over meadows and fields, while private terraces offer space for relaxing hours in nature.

The complex deliberately comprises only a few accommodations:

  • 7 tree house lofts

  • 7 tree house lodges

  • 2 Tiny Houses on the edge of the alder forest

This creates a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of privacy and limited availability.
